World History & Philosophy – 2nd Period Wednesday (10th-12th)
$375.00 – $425.00
Course description: This 1.5 credit course (1 for world history and .5 for philosophy) is intended to be the “capstone” course for the 3-year sequence of high school history. (Early American History, Modern American and World History w/ Literature and World History & Philosophy) This course will study history from all around the world, from Creation to the present day, with less emphasis on 20th-century history, as it is thoroughly covered in Modern American and World history. With such a broad scope we will easily see how “If we don’t learn from our history, we are doomed to repeat it.” We will also see the truth that “Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Our emphasis will be on a Biblical worldview of history, which clearly teaches us that God governs in the affairs of men. History will meet philosophy as we discover how philosophy shaped people who shaped history. We will examine how ideas influenced the course of history and led to either freedom or tyranny, prosperity or poverty, virtue or immorality. For history, along with a world history textbook, we will supplement with a Hillsdale College online course and another excellent book about Christianity’s influence on the world throughout history. For Philosophy we will have a separate text and deepen our study with an in-class, 10 lesson DVD course, examining philosophy through a Christian lens. There will also be 4 historical presentations in this class.
