IEW All Things Fun and Fascinating (4th-5th)

In this course, students will learn the basics of the IEW method as they are entertained by the humorous characters, cunning creatures and famous men of history in IEW’s All Things Fun and Fascinating course. They will learn the IEW writing method to take notes, create simple outlines, summarize narrative stories, construct a mini research report and compose creative essays. This approach to learning to write provides the structure that students need in order to develop confidence in the writing process. Additionally, stylistic techniques (strong verbs, quality adjectives, use of adverbial clauses, sentence openers, etc.) will be taught incrementally to move students from the basics to more sophisticated writing. This class will also have a grammar review and vocabulary development component.

Although students who are enrolled in this course do not need to have any previous experience with IEW writing, they are expected to know the basics of punctuation and sentence construction.   They should have some experience with writing sentences and short paragraphs.  Students will be expected to complete any assigned grammar, vocabulary and/or writing exercises (as listed on the syllabus) prior to class time each week. Keeping up with assignments will allow students to participate in classroom discussions and activities and will enable them to progress in skill development.
